This happened to be my favorite Christmas cookie this year.  I estimate that I made approximately 700 of these. I shipped them to many family and friends.

  • ½ cup soft butter
  • ½ cup shortening
  • 1½ cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2¾ cups of flour
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 Tablespoons sugar
  • 2 Teaspoons cinnamon

Combine 2 Tablespoons of sugar and 2 teaspoons of cinnamon. Set aside.

Mix together butter, shortening, sugar and eggs until very smooth. Add flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt. Mix until all ingredients are well blended. Make 1 inch balls and roll into cinnamon and sugar mixture. Place balls on un-greased cookie sheet. No more than 12 on a sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 8-10 minutes. Remove cookie from sheet immediately.


For a delicious alternative, add 1/2 a cup of crushed candy canes to the batter before rolling in to balls.  You could also add any other crushed candy to the batter, like Heath Bar chips.

This year, I made 3 varieties.  To distinguish between the different types, I made different colored sugar to roll the dough in before baking.  The original recipe calls for a cinnamon and sugar mixture, so that one appears to be light brown when baked.  For the candy cane variety, I mixed a small amount of sugar with a couple drops of red food coloring.  The heath bar cookies were rolled in green sugar prior to baking.
